an A-Z of alternative therapies

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and similar aromatic compounds from plants, for the purpose of improving a person's mood, cognitive function or health.

May be beneficial for:

  • Stress and stress related disorders
  • Muscular problems
  • Emotional disorders
  • Female complaints - e.g. menopause, pregnancy, period problems
  • Digestive disorders
  • Skin disorders

How does it work?

Aromatherapy is holistic, which means that it is aimed at balancing the whole person, mind, body and spirit.

It uses essential oils, the "life force" of flowers, herbs, plants, trees and spices.

When oils come into contact with the skin they may stimulate nerve endings, circulatory, the lymphatic system, muscle tissues, the nervous system or endocrine activity.

When inhaled they stimulate nerve endings in the nose and messages are carried to the brain.

Experiences

At the first session, you may be asked informal questions about your complaint, medical history and lifestyle.

  • Massage: A gentle massage with suitable oil diluted in a carrier oil.
  • Inhalation: Inhalation of a few drops of oil in hot water.
  • Vaporizer: A few drops in water, vaporised in an oil burner.
  • Bath: A few drops of oil in the bath works by inhalation and absorption through the skin.
  • Compress: Oil can be applied to an affected area on a cotton compress, warm or cold.
  • Toiletries: oils can be added to lotions, cream, shampoo and shower gel for extra benefit.
  • Using neat: Only some oils are suitable for use undiluted, take care.
  • Gargle, Mouthwash: Only some oils are suitable for internal use, take care.
