Before launching BSSK Events, we decided that it would be wise to learn what it was like to be an exhibitor.

The theory was, we would then know what exhibitors liked and disliked and we could use that to shape the BSSK shows to provide a positive and enjoyable exhibitor experience. We would also be able to hear what the visitors liked and did not like in a way that the promoter never manages to hear.

The best way to do this was to become an exhibitor for a year. This we did, and the very first show we attended was the Chatsworth Fairs event at Barnsley Metrodome!

It seemed quite fitting therefore that when the Chatsworth Fairs promoter decided to retire in 2008, she offered the events to us to take over.

There is a feeling of having come full circle with the acquisition of these shows, and although they will take a little while to mould into a BSSK event, we do feel we have made some progress, and they are taking shape nicely.

We have never been fond of sports halls, as it is hard to create the right ambience, but think we have found the answer at the Metrodome. We hire the marquee lining and have it carpeted, thus creating a softer effect and an ambient lighting, rather than the harsh halogen glare. The whole effect is like being in a large Bedouin tent, or never having actually been in one, what we assume it would be like!

The talks were always on an open stage in the hall, making it difficult for speakers to be heard. These were moved into the adjoining studio, giving then a much more relaxed atmosphere and with far less distraction. We tried moving the cafe too, but this didn't work so by popular demand, it is back in the hall making the event completely self contained. Visitors need not go wandering around the building for anything once in the event.

Word of the changes is beginning to circulate among exhibitors and some that had stopped attending are already back, so the show is already growing.

The 'Winter Spectacular' last year was a wonderful Christmas Shopping event, so we are looking forward to the summer one this year to see what that can become.
